The shot put women at the 1983 World Championships in Athletics took place on 10 and 12 August 1983 in Helsinki , Finland instead.

20 athletes from 14 countries took part in the competition. The female shot putters from the GDR won two medals, silver and bronze. Gold won the Czechoslovak Olympic bronze medalist from 1976 , two-time European Vice Champion ( 1978 / 1982 ) and EM -Third of 1974 Helena Fibingerová of 21.05 m. Silver went to Helma Knorscheidt with 20.70 m. The bronze medal went to the 1980 Olympic champion and two-time European champion (1978/1982) Ilona Slupianek with 20.56 m.

The qualification distance was at least 17.00 m in order to move directly into the final. Twelve athletes made this mark or pushed through, they are highlighted in light blue. Thus the number of participants planned for the final was reached, the final field did not have to be filled any further.
