Gael Martin

Gael Martin ( Gael Patricia Martin, née Mulhall ; born August 27, 1956 in Melbourne ) is a former Australian shot putter and discus thrower who won an Olympic bronze medal in 1984.

At the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton in 1978 , she won the shot put and took silver in the discus throw. In 1980 she was twelfth in the shot put at the Olympic Games in Moscow and was eliminated with the discus in qualifying. The following year she was convicted of doping with anabolic steroids at the Pacific Conference Games .

Two silver medals in their disciplines at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane was followed by an eleventh place at the 1983 World Athletics Championships in Helsinki. At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, she won bronze in the shot put and was eighth in the discus throw.

In 1985 she finished seventh in the shot put at the World Indoor Athletics Games in Paris , and in 1986 she completed her international career with a double gold at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh .

Overall she was eleven times Australian champion in the shot put (1976-1981, 1983-1987) and nine times in discus (1977-1981, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1987).

In 1987 she told an investigative commission of the Australian federal government that she had doped with anabolic steroids during her entire career as an athlete.
