Judy Oakes

Judy Oakes (actually Judith Miriam Oakes ; born February 14, 1958 in Lewisham, now the London Borough of Lewisham ) is a former British shot putter .

Starting for England , she won bronze at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton. Another bronze medal followed the following year at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in 1979 in Vienna.

In 1982 she won gold at the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane . At the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 1983 she was twelfth, at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles fourth and sixth at the European Indoor Championships in 1984 in Piraeus.

In 1986, a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh was followed by a 14th place at the European Championships in Stuttgart . In 1987 she was sixth at the European Indoor Championships in Liévin , ninth at the World Indoor Championships in Indianapolis and failed in qualifying at the World Championships in Rome . Also in the preliminary round she was eliminated from the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul.

The 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland brought another silver medal, the 1991 World Championships another preliminary round. In 1994 she won the Commonwealth Games in Victoria with gold, her fifth medal in a row. In 1995 she was eighth at the World Indoor Championships in Barcelona and was eliminated from the qualification at the World Championships in Gothenburg . The following year she was fourth at the European Indoor Championships in Stockholm and eleventh at the Olympic Games in Atlanta . In 1997 she was tenth at the World Indoor Championships in Paris and did not get past the first round at the World Championships in Athens .

She defended her title at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur. Her fourth Olympic participation in Sydney in 2000 ended in qualification.

Judy Oakes was also active in powerlifting and weightlifting . She became world champion of the International Powerlifting Federation three times : 1981 in the weight class up to 75 kg, 1982 and 1988 in the weight class up to 82.5 kg. At the World Weightlifting Championships in 1989 she won bronze in the class up to 82.5 kg.
