The men's javelin throw at the 1983 World Athletics Championships took place in Helsinki , Finland , on August 10 and 12, 1983 .

18 athletes from 13 countries took part in the competition. Won the gold medal of the European Championship -Third the previous year Detlef Michel , DDR , m with 89.48, silver with 85.60 meters went to the Americans Tom Petranoff , and the bronze medal, the Olympic champion from 1980 Dainis Kūla from the Soviet Union with 85.58 m.
