Heino Puuste (born September 7, 1955 in Lagedi , Rae ) is a former Estonian javelin thrower who started for the Soviet Union when he was active . After his active career he works as a trainer and looks after the Estonian world champion Andrus Värnik .

Athletic career

At the age of 19, Puuste won the Estonian national championship for the first time in 1975. He was able to win this title in 1979 and 1981. From 1979 to 1986 he was part of the Soviet national team and from 1980 to 1986 was continuously among the top ten in the world rankings. In 1979 he won the bronze medal at the Summer Universiade in Bucharest . With a width of 86.10 meters, Puuste just missed a medal in fourth at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow . In 1981 he won his second bronze medal at the Edmonton Universiade . At the European Athletics Championships in Athens in 1982 , he won the silver medal behind Uwe Hohn with a width of 89.56 meters . The following year he had to be content with fourth place again at the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 1983 . In 1986 he won the silver medal behind Tom Petranoff at the Goodwill Games in Moscow . and finished fifth at the European Championships in Stuttgart .

In the course of his career, he improved the Estonian national record ten times. In July 1978, with a throw of 84.06 meters, he exceeded Mart Paama's twelve-year-old record by one centimeter. During his career he improved the Estonian record to 94.20 meters. He achieved this distance on June 5, 1983 at a meeting in Birmingham . He also improved the Soviet record, which was held by Jānis Lūsis until then and was 93.80 meters wide. After the condition of the throwing device was changed in 1986, all record lists were deleted. On February 23, 1986, Puuste entered the record lists again with a width of 73.84 meters. During the year he improved the Estonian record to 83.20 meters. This was clearly exceeded in 1990 by Marek Kaleta .

Puuste, who has been married to former basketball player Oksana Kullam since 1997 , has been training 2005 world champion and current Estonian record holder Andrus Värnik since 2003 .
