The men's 200-meter run at the 1983 World Athletics Championships took place on August 12, 13 and 14, 1983 in the Helsinki Olympic Stadium in the Finnish capital, Helsinki .

52 athletes from 42 countries took part in the competition. The US sprinters achieved a double victory in this competition. World champion was Calvin Smith , who had won silver over 100 meters two days earlier and on the final day as a member of the US sprint relay came to a second gold medal. Second place went to Elliott Quow . The bronze medal, the Italian Olympic champion in 1980 , Olympic bronze medalist from 1972 and two-time European champion ( 1974 / 1978 ) Pietro Mennea .
