Desai Williams

Desai Williams (born June 12, 1959 in Basseterre ) is a retired Canadian athlete .

Williams was ten times Canadian champion: six times in the 200-meter run (1977, 1979-1983) and four times in the 100-meter run (1979-1981, 1983). At the 1983 Summer Universiade in Edmonton, he won the silver medal over 100 m behind the Nigerian Chidi Imoh . Shortly thereafter, he finished eighth over the same distance at the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki . In the 200-meter run, he reached the semi-finals, with the 4 x 100-meter relay he was eliminated in the preliminary run.

At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Williams was used as the final runner of the Canadian relay. Together with Sterling Hinds , Ben Johnson and Tony Sharpe , he won the bronze medal behind the teams from the United States and Jamaica. In the 100- and 200-meter run, he made it to the semi-finals.

Together with Atlee Mahorn , Ben Johnson and Mark McKoy , Williams won the gold medal in the 4 x 100 meter relay at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. At the World Athletics Championships in 1987 , he reached fourth place with the relay. In the 100-meter run, he was eliminated in the quarter-finals. At the Olympic Games in 1988 he finished sixth over the same distance in a personal best of 10.11 s. He finished seventh with the season.

Although Williams never tested positive on doping controls in his active career , he later admitted to using anabolic steroids for a short period of time .

Desai Williams is 1.75 m tall and had a competition weight of 72 kg. He worked as a sprint coach for the Toronto Argonauts and at York University .

In early October 2018, Williams was banned for life by the Canadian Athletics Federation; an adult athlete reported him for sexual harassment.
