The men's long jump at the 1983 World Athletics Championships took place on August 9-10, 1983 in Helsinki , Finland .

31 athletes from 25 countries took part in the competition. The US long jumpers recorded a triple success in this competition. The gold medal went to Carl Lewis with 8.55 m, silver went to Jason Grimes with 8.29 m, and the bronze medal went to Mike Conley Sr. with 8.12 m.

qualification

August 9, 1983

The qualification distance was at least 7.90 m in order to move directly into the final. Eleven athletes made this mark or jumped further, they are highlighted in light blue. First another jumper with the greatest width of the remaining participants qualified for the final, because the number of athletes in the final should be at least twelve. In this case, two athletes with the next best distance were tied after qualifying. Both were eligible to participate in the final on the following day, they are highlighted in light green.
