August 24, 2015, 10:00 a.m. local time (4:00 a.m. CEST )

The qualification was carried out in two groups. The qualification width was 8.15 m. Since only two jumpers exceeded this distance (highlighted in light blue), the final field was filled with the next best athletes from both groups to a total of twelve participants (highlighted in light green). So finally 7.98 m had to be achieved in a valid second-best jump in order to reach the final fight.

final

August 25, 2015, 7:25 PM local time (1:25 PM CEST )

The favorites were the Olympic and reigning European champion Greg Rutherford from Great Britain and the reigning world champion Alexander Menkow from Russia. One of the candidates for the fight for the medals were the Dutch vice world champion Ignisious Gaisah and the Portuguese European Championship third Kafétien Gomis. However, Gaisah was already eliminated in qualifying.

In the first round there were only three jumps over the eight-meter mark. The two Chinese Wang Jianan and Gao Xinglong reached 8.14 m, Menkow jumped 8.02 m. The second round was not necessarily of high quality either. Only Rutherford with 8.28 m and Wang with 8.18 m achieved really good distances. All other participants stayed shorter than eight meters with their jumps. This level continued in the third series of experiments. Only the Australian Fabrice Lapierre - 8.10 m - third Chinese Li Jinzhe - 8.09 m - and Gomis - 8.02 m - could improve. Before the three finals, Rutherford was leading with 8.29 m ahead of Wang with 8.18 m. Gao was third with 8.14 m ahead of Lapierre - 8.09 m. Menkow and Gomis followed with 8.02 m each. Behind them, the Russian Sergei Poljanski reached the final of the best eight with 7.97 m.

With his fourth jump, Rutherford reached 8.41 m, which further expanded his lead. On lap five, Jinzhe improved by one centimeter to 8.10 m, temporarily displacing Lapierre to fourth place. But the Australian was able to counter. He jumped 8.20 m and was now second. Now Lapierre had really gained a foothold. He was the only participant to improve again with his last jump. He achieved 8.24 m, which, however, did not change the ranking. Greg Rutherford lived up to his role as a favorite by winning the world title. Fabrice Lapierre came in second, followed by Wang Jianan in third, Gao Xinglong - fourth - and Li Jinzhe - fifth - three Chinese runners-up.
