final

August 26, 2015, 9:00 p.m. local time (3:00 p.m. CEST )

The first and second of the last World Championships Milcah Chemos Cheywa and Lidya Chepkurui , both from Kenya, were not in the race this time. Nevertheless, there was a strong field of participants with the Olympic champion from 2012 and world champion from 2011 Habiba Ghribi from Tunisia, the Olympic and World Cup third Sofia Assefa from Ethiopia, the Olympic and World Cup fourth Hiwot Ayalew, also from Ethiopia. Kenya was represented by the sixth of the last World Championships, Hyvin Jepkemoi, and the Ethiopian Olympic fifth and World Cup fifth Etenesh Diro were also at the start. The field of favorites consisted exclusively of African runners. The American Emma Coburn and the German Gesa Felicitas Krause were clear outsiders.

The final race was initially slow, but after eight hundred meters, the Indian Lalita Barar dared a push and quickly gained a small lead. At the thousand meter mark, which she passed in 3: 09.96 minutes, the distance was about ten meters. The runners behind her let them go and the lead grew a bit afterwards, but then leveled off at about ten meters. At two thousand meters, the transit time was 6: 22.27 minutes, i.e. the second kilometer was covered in 3: 12.31 minutes. That resulted in an end time of around 9:30 minutes. Two laps before the finish, the Indian ran out of strength, she was now overrun by her competitors without any particular increase in speed. Some of the weaker runners had already had to tear down, but the large field was still close together.

Right at the front was Coburn, which now accelerated significantly. Ghribi and Krause followed closely, the other Africans still held back. At the beginning of the last lap a top group of seven had pulled away. Ghribi now took the lead in front of Coburn, Jepkemoi, Krause, the Kenyan Virginia Nganga and the two Ethiopians Assefa and Ayalew. However, Ayalew had difficulties on the back straight to keep up with the now very high pace. At the beginning of the home straight there were finally five runners who fought for victory and medals. Ghribi was in front, on the inside track almost next to her Krause, outside a little offset Jepkemoi, behind that Assefa and Coburn. Krause's strong technique paid off at the last obstacle, it penetrated the inside and was now ahead. In the last few meters the race turned into a three-way battle, Hyvin Kiyeng Jepkemoi finally had the most strength and prevailed with a lead of three tenths of a second. There was a photo finish for second place, Habiba Ghribi won the silver medal with a hundredth of a second ahead of Gesa Felicitas Krause. Sofia Assefa finished fourth, Emma Coburn fifth. Hiwot Ayalew came in sixth and Virginia Nganga in seventh place. Lalita Barar, who had been leading for so long, still fought eighth place.

The runners had covered the last thousand meters with their speed increase in 2: 56.84 min, so that the time of the first three was still under 9:20 min and Gesa Felicitas Krause set a new personal best.
