A rather extraordinary event took place during this run-up. Multiple medalist Veronica Campbell-Brown from Jamaica started the race on lane five and finished it on lane six. At the end of the bend she had switched to the British Margaret Adeoye's track, a few yards behind Campbell-Brown. Since Adeoye had not been hindered, Campbell-Brown's lane change remained without consequences for the Jamaican, who won the heat. The British also qualified for the semi-finals.

Just like over 100 meters , the sprinters showed excellent performances in the heats and especially in the semi-finals. Marie-Josee Ta Lou 22.56 s were not enough for the final. The Jamaican title holder and Olympic runner-up in 2012 Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. who had already become world champion over 100 meters here, decided not to take part in the 200-meter run . The favorites were the Dutch European champion Dafne Schippers - here already vice world champion over 100 meters, the two Jamaicans Elaine Thompson - vice world champion in 2013, here with the second fastest semi-final time - and Veronica Campbell-Brown - Olympic champion in 2008 , world champion in 2011 and World Cup -Third in 2013, Britain's Dina Asher-Smith as the fastest in the semifinals and the American Candyce McGrone - the third fastest time in the semifinals.

In the first corner, the two Jamaicans Thompson and Campbell-Brown and McGrone were almost on par. Schippers was well behind with their well-known weak start. On the home stretch, Thompson broke away from Campbell-Brown and McGrone. A duel now developed between Thompson and Schippers, who had by far the best stamina and charged from behind. With the last few steps, the Dutchwoman also passed the Jamaican and became world champion with a wafer-thin three hundredths of a second ahead of Elaine Thomas. Veronica Campbell-Brown was third under 22 seconds. Candyce McGrone missed the bronze medal by four hundredths of a second. Only six hundredths of a second behind her, Dina Asher-Smith was fifth, ahead of Jeneba Tarmoh from the USA and Iwet Lalowa-Collio from Bulgaria. 22.50 seconds were only enough for the Jamaican Sherone Simpson to finish eighth.

Dafne Schippers won the final in 21.63 s and not only undercut Silke Möller's world championship record from 1987 - at that time set under her maiden name Silke Gladisch, but also the European record (21.71 s) from Marita Koch - 1979 and 1984 - and Heike Drechsler - twice in 1986. During this time, Schippers became the third fastest female runner of all time in the world's best list of over 200 meters . The second placed Elaine Thompson took fifth place in this list with her time of 21.66 s. Dina Asher-Smith set a new national record for Great Britain in 22.07 s in fifth place, in the all-time world best list she was currently 34th.
