Maria Belimbasaki ( Greek Μαρία Μπελιμπασάκη , born June 19, 1991 in Agios Nikolaos ) is a Greek athlete who specializes in short-distance running.

Career

On June 15, 2012, Maria Belimbasaki, when she was 20 at the time, became the first Greek champion in the 100-meter run . One day later, she celebrated her second Greek championship title at the national championships in Athens by winning the 200-meter run . After the Greek championships, she took part in the 2012 European Championships in Helsinki from June 27th to July 1st, starting over the 100 meters and the 200 meters. While she survived the prelims in the 200-meter run, Belimbasaki was eliminated from the 100-meter heats. In the semifinals over the 200 meters, she was eliminated from the competition in a time of 23.31 seconds.

In addition, Maria Belimbasaki qualified in both disciplines for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and was nominated for the games by Elliniki Olymbiaki Epitropi . In the Olympic Stadium in London she was eliminated over the 100 meters in the lead with a time of 11.63 seconds. In the 200-meter run, she ran a time of 23.36 seconds and was eliminated from the competition.

Maria Belimbasaki was nominated by the Greek Athletics Federation for the 2013 World Championships in Moscow and was allowed to start there in the 200-meter run . In the Luschniki Olympic Stadium she qualified for the semi-finals with a time of 23.41 seconds. In the semifinals, she ran a time of 23.46 seconds and was eliminated from the competition.

Maria Belimbasaki won her third Greek championship title on July 20, 2014 over the 200 meters in 23.27 seconds. One month later, she took part in the 2014 European Championships in Zurich between August 12 and 17 . You start over the 200 meters. After she survived the preliminary run, she was eliminated from the competition in the semifinals with a time of 23.37 seconds. She also started together with Georgia Kokloni , Elisavet Pesiridou and Andriana Ferra in the 4 x 100 meter relay ; the Greek team eliminated in the heats with a time of 43.81 seconds.

In 2015, she again celebrated the Greek championship title in the 100-meter run and the 200-meter run . She won over the 100 meters in a time of 11.47 seconds and over the 200 meters in 23.12 seconds. After the championships, she took part in the 2015 World Championships in Beijing for Greece and started the 200 meters. With a time of 23.15 seconds she survived the heats and was eliminated in the semifinals with a time of 23.28 seconds.

On June 19, 2016, she won the 200 meter competition at the Greek Athletics Championships for the third time in a row. She won in a time of 23.21 seconds. A little later, she took part in the 2016 European Championships in Amsterdam , where she started in three disciplines. In the 100-meter semi-final she ran a time of 11.62 seconds and was eliminated from the competition. Over the 200 meters she was just eliminated in the semifinals, but finally finished 9th, her best result at a European Athletics Championships . In addition, she started together with Maria Gatou , Elisavet Pesiridou and Ekaterini Dalaka in the 4 x 100 meter relay , with which she did not survive the heats. She was nominated by the Elliniki Olymbiaki Epitropi for the 200-meter run at the 2016 Summer Olympics . In her lead she ran a time of 23.19 seconds and was eliminated from the Olympic competition.

At the Greek indoor championships she was able to win a championship title for the first time in 2017. On February 18, 2017, she won the 60-meter run in 7.30 seconds . In the outdoor season, she qualified over the 200 meters for the 2017 World Athletics Championships in London . In her run at the London Stadium , she ran the 200 meters in 23.21 seconds and was eliminated in the heats with this time.

In 2018, she started at the Greek indoor championships in the unfamiliar 400-meter run and secured the Greek championship title in 52.62 seconds. A day later she also won the Greek championship title in the 200 meters. After the two championship titles, she took part in the 2018 World Indoor Championships in the Arena Birmingham from March 1 to 4, where she started in the 400-meter run. In the run-up, she ran a new personal best of 52.27 seconds, placing third overall behind Courtney Okolo from the USA and Jamaican Stephenie Ann McPherson . In the semifinals she was disqualified for leaving the track.
