initial situation
As is almost always the case with such large championships, it was not easy for the marathon to find favorite positions. Too seldom can the athletes run this distance because otherwise the form is lost. In addition, the focus for the season highlight is not for all marathon stars on the world championships, but often also on the major city marathons such as London, Berlin, New York, etc. The favorites here in Beijing were definitely the Kenyan world champion from 2011 and 2013 Edna Kiplagat and the Ethiopian Mare Dibaba as second of this year's world best list. Above all, other strong runners from Ethiopia and Kenya were to be expected here.
Race course
August 30, 2015, 7:30 a.m. local time (1:30 a.m. CEST )
The difficult climatic conditions of Beijing with a high level of air pollution made a fast race impossible. For a long time, the Japanese led the field with Mai Itō and Risa Shigetomo, the pace remained within the expected limits with individual 5 km sections in the range of well over seventeen minutes. However, the first gaps soon appeared. After five kilometers there were still twenty runners at the front, while halfway through the course there were sixteen of them left. After thirty kilometers, defending champion Kiplagat had taken the lead in a top group of twelve. Now it got a little faster, a six-man leadership group was formed with the two Ethiopians Dibaba and Tigist Tufa, the Kenyans Kiplagat, Jemima Sumgong and Helah Kiprop and Eunice Kirwa from Bahrain. Itō and the North Korean Kim Hey-song were nineteen seconds back, followed by the American Serena Burla - 23 seconds behind - and Shigetomo - 25 seconds behind.
From kilometer 35, Dibaba took the lead and accelerated considerably. As the first runner, Tufa fell victim to acceleration, she had to let go and was soon just under a minute behind. Next, Kiplagat couldn't quite follow the pace and fell behind. Two kilometers from the finish line, Dibaba, Sumgong, Kiprop and Kirwa were still four runners in the fight for victory and medals.
Upon arriving at the stadium, Dibaba was leading, Kiprop on their heels. Kirwa followed with a small gap, followed by Sumgong with a little more distance. There was a real finish sprint - a very rare case in a marathon. Kiprop attacked again, but Mare Dibaba countered and won the world title. Helah Kiprop won the silver medal ahead of Eunice Kirwa. Jemima Sumgong in fourth place was three seconds short of bronze in the end. Edna Kiplagat finished fifth, 36 seconds after Sumgong. Behind it the residues were bigger. Tigist Tufa came in sixth place, Mai Itō was seventh ahead of the Ethiopian Tirfi Tsegaye.
