Souad Aït Salem (born January 6, 1979 in Mecheria , Naama province ) is an Algerian long-distance runner .

Career

In 2000 in Algiers , she became the African champion in the 10,000 meter run . In 2002 he finished fifth at the African Championships in Radés over the same distance, but failed at the 2003 World Athletics Championships in Paris / Saint-Denis and at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens in the semifinals of the 5,000-meter run .

In 2006 she had her breakthrough as a road runner . She won the Alexander the Great Marathon in 2:28:22 h, and at the 2006 World Road Running Championships over 20 km in Debrecen she came ninth in the national record time of 1:06:11 h.

In 2007 she was able to improve even further: First she won the half marathon Roma - Ostia and then won the Rome marathon with the national and course record of 2:25:08 h. In the marathon of the World Athletics Championships in Osaka she came in 16th place.

In 2008 she repeated her victory at Roma - Ostia and finished sixth in the London Marathon and ninth in the marathon of the Beijing Olympic Games .

At the 2012 Summer Olympics she finished 37th in London.

In 2014 she won the Hanover Marathon and was able to repeat this success in 2015.
