Career

Berhane Adere (born July 21, 1973 in Shewa Province ) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner . After a career as a track runner , which culminated in winning the world title in the 10,000 meter run at the 2003 World Championships in Paris / Saint-Denis , she has recently also been successful on the marathon route .

Career

After she won gold over 10,000 meters at the African Championships in 1993 and finished fifth over 3000 meters , she started at the World Championships in Stuttgart over 10,000 meters, but was eliminated in the semifinals. The same fate overtook them at the 1995 World Championships in Gothenburg over the same distance. At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , she finished 18th over 10,000 meters after she had won gold with the Ethiopian team at the Marathon Relay World Championships earlier this year .

At the 1997 World Championships in Athens , she finished fourth over 10,000 meters. The following year she won gold in the 5000 meter run at the African Championships in Dakar . At the 1999 World Championships in Seville she came seventh over 10,000 meters and 12th at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney .

The following year the big breakthrough came with winning the silver medal at the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton over 10,000 meters, a third place at the Half Marathon World Championships in Bristol in 1:08:17 h and a victory at the Zurich New Year's Eve run . In the following season she set an indoor world record over 3000 meters (8: 29.15 min) and won the title at both the half marathon world championships in Brussels and the 5000 meter run at the African championships.

The following year, she won gold over 3000 meters at the 2003 World Indoor Championships in Birmingham , silver at the World Half Marathon Championships in Vilamoura , set her best time over 5000 meters with 14: 29.32 minutes and then won the 2003 World Championships in Paris / Saint -Denis with the African record of 30: 04.18 min gold over 10,000 meters. In the same year she won the Great Manchester Run and was second in the Great North Run in 1:07:32 h (although this half marathon course is not suitable for a record because of its gradient).

At the 10,000 meter run of the 2003 World Championships in Paris / Saint-Denis , Adere came silver between her compatriots, the sisters Tirunesh and Ejegayehu Dibaba . In 2004 she set another indoor world record with 14: 39.29 min over 5000 meters, but then suffered an injury to the Achilles tendon and was not included in the Ethiopian squad for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens due to poor shape .

At the World Championships in Helsinki in 2005 , she had her last big appearance on the track and won silver over 10,000 meters. When she won the Zevenheuvelenloop (her second after 2000), she set a national record in the 15 km road race .

In 2006 she ventured again on the marathon distance after a first attempt at the Rotterdam Marathon 2001 was disappointing with a 15th place and a time of 2:41:50 h, and came fourth at the London Marathon with 2:21: 52 hours a national record. Another national record followed shortly afterwards when she won the Great Manchester Run over 10 km in 31:07 minutes. After Gete Wami had undercut this mark at the Berlin Marathon , Adere quickly recovered the record after winning the Great North Run with a win at the Chicago Marathon in 2:20:42 hours. The following year she won the Rotterdam Half Marathon and again got the upper hand in Chicago when she intercepted Adriana Pirtea, who had been leading until then, in a heat race in the final meters .

The 2008 season began for her with a win at the Dubai Marathon in 2:22:42 h. She finished seventh in London and tenth in Chicago. She did not finish in the marathon of the Beijing Olympic Games . In 2009 she finished seventh in Dubai and fifth in both London and Chicago.

In 2010 she ran the half marathon of the Mardi Gras Marathon with 1:07:52 h, the fastest time of a woman on US soil and won the Great North Run for the second time.

Four times, more than any other athlete, she won the BOclassic (1997, 2002-2004). Further successes in road races include victories at the Giro Media Blenio (1998), at Marseille - Cassis (1999), at the Course de l'Escalade (2002, 2003), at the Carlsbad 5000 (2003) and at the RAK half marathon (2007)

Berhane Adere is 1.70 m tall and weighs 48 kg. She is married to her fellow runner Lemi Erpassa (bronze medalist with the Ethiopian team at the 1994 Cross Country World Championships and the 1996 World Marathon Relay Championship), who takes care of her son, who was born in 1994. Since 2000 she has been looked after by the German manager Volker Wagner , to whom his protégé Tegla Loroupe had established contact. She has been the UNICEF ambassador for Ethiopia since 2004 .
