Ekiden

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ekiden ( Japanese 駅 伝 競走 , ekiden kyōsō , dt. About: "Station message forwarding race") is a collective name for relay races in the long-distance range .

history

The Ekiden form of competition developed from a communication and transport system of the 17th century between the Shogunate seat of Edo (today Tokyo ) and the imperial residence of Kyoto . The first Ekiden athletic competition was sponsored by the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper in 1917 and ran over three days and 516 km from Kyoto to Tokyo to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the relocation of the capital of Japan . Instead of a message, a ribbon (“tasuki”) is handed over at today's Ekiden competitions. The length of the individual stages as well as the entire route varies: while distances are common in the school sector, with the individual stages between 2 and 10 km long, the world's longest Ekiden race around Kyūshū covers a distance of 1064 km, divided into 72 stages.

The marathon relay (42.195 km)

The best-known form of Ekiden is the marathon relay. In its standardized form with six runners and stage lengths of 5 km, 10 km, 5 km, 10 km, 5 km and 7.195 km, it is a discipline that is included in the IAAF's list of world records in athletics . The world's best time for men is 1:57:06 hours, set by Kenya ( Josphat Muchiri Ndambiri , Martin Irungu Mathathi , Daniel Muchunu Mwangi , Mekubo Mogusu , Onesmus Nyerre , John Kariuki ) on November 23, 2005 in Chiba ; that of women is 2:11:41 hours, established by China ( Jiang Bo , Dong Yanmei , Zhao Fengting , Ma Zaijie , Lan Lixin , Lin Na ) on February 28, 1998 in Beijing .

Since the 1980s there have been efforts to establish Ekidenlaufen internationally in competitive sports. In 1988, for example, a 50 km relay was held in central New York City . In 1992, 1994, 1996 and 1998 the IAAF World Championships were held in the marathon relay. After the end of this championship, such top-class Ekiden races are almost exclusively limited to Japan. Probably the most famous international race has been held in Chiba on Labor Day in November since 1988 (with around 15 relays from all continents). There have been mixed relays since 2007.

Ekiden runs for recreational athletes

In the popular sports area, on the other hand, Ekidenlaufen are enjoying increasing international popularity. In Switzerland , the Ekiden is only offered in its standardized form in Basel as part of the Run to the Beat Basel . An example of an Ekiden over a longer distance is the Swiss SOLA relay . One Ekiden organized through virtual collaboration is the Deutschlandstaffel , a relay race across Germany that has taken place twice so far. Even with fun runs over the marathon distance, an Ekiden is now often offered as a side competition, partly to introduce hobby runners to longer distances, partly to achieve higher numbers of participants. Many company runs are also organized according to the Ekiden principle.
