Ayelech Worku

Ayelech Worku (born June 12, 1979 in the Arsi region ) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner who has now turned to the marathon after a career on the track .

In 1995 she was second in the 5000-meter run at the Pan-African Games . At the 1997 World Championships in Athens , she was twelfth over the same distance.

Two years later she won the 5000 meters of the Pan-African Games and was third at the 1999 World Championships in Seville .

Shortly before the Olympic Games in 2000 , she set her 5000 meter best time of 14: 41.23 minutes. In Sydney she narrowly missed an Olympic medal and finished fourth in 14: 42.67 minutes behind Gabriela Szabo (ROM), Sonia O'Sullivan (IRL) and her compatriot Gete Wami .

The following year, she won again bronze over 5000 meters at the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton .

While her debut at the Amsterdam Marathon in 2006 with a fifth place in 2:31:11 h did not quite meet expectations, there was an increase in the Hamburg Marathon in 2007 , which she won in 2:29:14 h.
