Dong Yanmei

Dong Yanmei ( Chinese  董 艶 梅  /  董 艳梅 , Pinyin Dǒng Yànméi ; born February 16, 1977 ) is a Chinese long-distance runner .

The young runner was looked after by controversial coach Ma Junren when she caused a sensation at the 1997 Chinese national games in Shanghai .

In the run-up, she improved Fernanda Ribeiro's five-year-old record in the 5000 meter run by more than five seconds to 14: 31.27 minutes after she was already champion in the 10,000 meter run two days earlier with 30: 38.09 minutes had become. In the final she was even faster with 14: 29.82 min, but had to admit defeat to Jiang Bo (14: 28.09 min), who had also remained below the old world record in the run-up. A few days later, Dong won the Dalian Marathon in 2:28:09 h.

In 1998 she was the second runner in the Chinese relay, which set the current world record in the marathon relay on February 28 in Beijing with 2:11:41 hours . Dong ran 10 km in 31:36 minutes.

In 2000 she was one of the athletes from Ma's squad who were removed from the Chinese roster for the Olympic Games in Sydney after a suspicious blood test .

In 2001 she was over 3000 m fifth at the World Athletics Championships in Lisbon and over 5000 m fourth at the World Athletics Championships in Edmonton . Shortly afterwards she won the 5000 m and 10,000 m at the Universiade in Beijing.
