SOLA relay
The Zurich SOLA relay ( SOLA for short ) is an academic relay race around the city of Zurich and over the adjacent hills around the northern end of Lake Zurich . It is organized by the Academic Sports Association Zurich (ASVZ). The now around 120 km long SOLA takes place every year at the beginning of May (possibly at the end of April) and consists of 14 sections, which are completed by 14 different runners from one of up to 1000 teams, two of which are mandatory women's courses. Other SOLA relays are SOLA Basel (since 2018, around 80 km long) and SOLA Winterthur ( Winti-SOLA , since 2016, around 85 km long).
The idea of an academic relay race, and the name Solastafette ( Sonnenstafette , Swedish: Solastafetten , 250 km long), came to Switzerland from Sweden in the early 1970s. The fifth Swedish Sola in 1972 ( fifth consecutive international anniversary Solastafette , Swedish: Femte kontinuerliga internationella Jubileums-Solastafetten ) inspired the university sports teachers Walter Hiemeyer and Charly Schneiter when they took part in this run with their Swiss team.
In May 2020, in times of the COVID-19 pandemic , the Zurich-based SOLA failed .

The SOLA relay was “invented”, ie brought to Switzerland, by university sports teachers Walter Hiemeyer (†) and Charly Schneiter (1911–2002).
Sweden
Solastafette Göteborg - Karlstad, 1967–1998
In 1972, a team of university sports teachers Walter Hiemeyer and Charly Schneiter took part in the fifth Swedish Sola , the fifth consecutive international Jubilee Solastafette (Swedish: Femte kontinuerliga internationella Jubileums-Solastafetten ), an academic relay race in Sweden, and took third place. The run, which led from Gothenburg to Karlstad , took place every year from 1967 to 1998. It was 250 km (25 miles ) long and divided into 25 routes - 10 of which had to be run by women. Hiemeyer and Schneiter were so enthusiastic about the run that they wanted to do something similar in Zurich.
In the autumn of 1967 the Göteborg Student Sports Association (Swedish: Göteborgs Studenters Idrottsförening (GSIF)) and the Karlstad Student Sports Association (Swedish: Karlstad Studenters Idrottsförening (KSIF)) came up with the idea of organizing an academic relay race between the two cities.
- In Karlstad? In Gothenburg? No, between Gothenburg and Karlstad, 25 miles on country lanes, bike paths and roads. Divide the route into 25 smaller ones of 3 to 18 km each, and to get some mix, at least three routes must be run by girls. Then end the run in Karlstad with a big party in the evening. GSIF prepares the tracks, KSIF the party. Time? Suitable from the beginning of May, from 1968. What will it be called? We walk to “Sola in Karlstad” - Solastafetten.

A logo was quickly created, the famous happy sun. It was soon taken over by the city and municipality of Karlstad and is still the symbol of Karlstad today.

In the first run in 1968, eight teams started, seven from Gothenburg and one from Karlstad. Gradually, the number of routes rose to thirty and at least ten had to be run by girls. Initially only contested by teams from GSIF and KSIF, other universities were soon added - numerous teams from Luleå in the north to Lund in the south. In the late 1970s there were up to 120 teams at the start - from the athletically competitive to the rather relaxed ones who particularly appreciated the encounters and the parties.
The first successors to the Sola relay in Europe were the Batavieren Race in Holland (1973) and the Sola relay in Switzerland (1974).
The name leads back to the legend of a young Swede who, due to her extreme beauty, had to flee from her admirers again and again. Her nickname Sola i Karlstad (Swedish: Sun from Karlstad ) was then adopted for the academic running event from Gothenburg to Karlstad and later also in Switzerland.
Legend
The expression "The sun in Karlstad" is not only heard in Sweden. The expression "shines like the sun in Karlstad" is also used in Norway and Denmark.
- “The sun in Karlstad” died more than 100 years ago. * I learned her story from Major CE Nygren and from the printer Albin Forsell. "Sola i Carlstad" was a beautiful girl, daughter of the tailor Johan Holtz von Karlstad, a strict housefather who kept his family in breeding and honoring. His daughter Eva Lisa was born in 1770 * and brought up to work hard and great virtue. She grew up to be a dazzling blonde beauty, and even as a child aroused such admiration that people had to turn around to look at her on the street. She soon had to go out into the world to help support the family. As an innkeeper, she traveled from one inn to another. At the time, this profession was not very prestigious, and it was not easy for a virtuous and thrifty girl to stay in one place long if she did not want the same thing as the young regulars. This explained the eternal moving.

- In the end it ended up in “Carlstads Gamla Gästegiveri” and there it attracted an unusually large number of guests. Everyone wanted to see the beautiful «Sola». But suddenly some youth became sun blind and she had to disappear behind the clouds again. Everyone must be happy, and for Eva Lisa this was the money. With this she could buy nice clothes, help her family, and still save to buy her own inn. So did she. In 1812 she bought Carlstads Gamla Gästegiveri, where she had previously worked as a maid, and so she stayed the sun in Karlstad.
- Eva Lisa had learned to use her beauty. She knew that was why she had received the big tip and was now attracting the many guests. She curtsied, nodded and blinked at everyone and was fun, happy and glowing; but it shone most of all when she counted the cash register in the evening. Nobody knew about a love story.
- She probably found such a luxury too great. She understood that more men would be interested in a beautiful and free woman than a married man with perhaps a jealous husband. If she did have a little "faiblesse", she knew how to hide it well. She died a respected and honored lady of society in 1828, and in the church book the pastor wrote next to her name: «‹ The sun in Karlstad ›Eva Lisa Holtz, the cause and the origin of the expression passed before I could explain where from the expression came from. "

Switzerland
In memory of Walter Hiemeyer, who with his ASVZ team brought the idea and the name to Zurich (see history ), the SOLA relay has been carrying the Walter Hiemeyer memorial run since 1983 .
SOLA St. Gallen - Zurich, 1974–1985
The SOLA relay was first held in Switzerland in 1974, until 1985 on the route from St. Gallen to Zurich , with 300 runners in 23 teams, over a distance of 95 (98.5) kilometers.

SOLA Zurich, since 1986
SOLA has been taking place in the greater Zurich area since 1986, over a distance of around 120 kilometers at the time.
In 2013 the total distance was 116.7 km, with 14 sections between 4.11 and 14.10 km, the height difference to be overcome was 2635 m. 900 teams with around 12,500 runners ran.
As of 2019 - A 14-person running team of up to 1000 teams conquers a total distance of 114.18 km and an altitude difference of 2655 m. The 14 sections are between 3.71 and 14.09 km long, two of which are mandatory women's routes (routes 1 and 10). On route 12, seniors (50 years and over) and women receive a bonus of 1.08 km and 50 m. In principle, all ASVZ card holders, students and alumni (university graduates) who can invite guests are eligible to participate, whereby each team must consist of at least 8 eligible participants.
2020 - in times of the COVID-19 pandemic , the SOLA failed .

SOLA Winterthur, since 2016
Since autumn 2016, the 85 km long Winti-SOLA with 12 sections around the city of Winterthur has been taking place on the last weekend in September every year. The route runs along the Winterthur circular route . The first Winti-SOLA (2016) took place with 110 teams. A year later with already 133 teams, 1596 runners. Around 140 teams participated in 2018. Co-organizers are the Winterthur Sports Office and the Academic Sports Association Zurich (ASVZ).

SOLA Basel, since 2018
SOLA Basel, inspired by its predecessors, has been held since May 2018. The relay race with a total length of 80 kilometers is divided into 10 sections from 4.5 to 12.5 kilometers. Start and finish is the park in the green ( Green 80 ). At the Mini SOLA , 2.7 km through the park in the countryside, the little ones can find their way into the large SOLA Basel. You start with families and seniors in cross-generational teams of 6 runners each.
