Green 80 was the name of the 2nd Swiss Exhibition for Gardening and Landscaping in 1980 in the Brüglinger Ebene in the municipality of Münchenstein . Although the Neue Welt tram stop and the actual site is called “Park im Grünen”, “Green 80” has retained its name.

The park is open to the public around the clock and can be reached via the Neue Welt tram and bus stop. The attached botanical garden can be reached via the S-Bahn station Basel Dreispitz or the tram stop St. Jakob.

Horticultural Exhibition Green 80

The attraction Tour St. Jaques is now in Europa-Park .

On April 12, 1980, the Green 80 was opened by Federal President Georges-André Chevallaz and lasted until October 12. For the exhibition, 13,000 trees and bushes were planted on an area of 46  hectares , the cost of the exhibition amounted to around 60 million francs.

One of the landmarks was the "Dino", a large concrete dinosaur that was preserved until the beginning of 2005. Due to aging and the associated risk of collapse, the dinosaur, which was originally only intended for the duration of the Green 80 exhibition, had to be demolished. Another landmark of the exhibition was a 75 meter high tower with a rotating viewing platform that could be raised and lowered like a lift ( gyro tower ). The following year it moved to the Federal Garden Show in Kassel and in 1982 to the Floriade in Amsterdam , before it found its permanent location in the Europa-Park as the Euro Tower in 1983 .

Another attraction was the monorail used , which connected the different parts of the park with one another. It was dismantled again after the exhibition ended. The massive red-brown iron sculpture "Amboss" by Bernhard Luginbühl is near the lake and serves as an eye-catcher and a children's slide. In the end, over three million visitors saw this beautifully decorated garden landscape, and the British Queen Elizabeth II also found her way into the exhibition. Kurt Aeschbacher , who later became a television presenter for Swiss television , was Deputy Director at Grün 80.

neighborhood

The current park is bordered by the Brüglingen Botanical Garden, which was part of the Green 80 and is maintained by the city of Basel . It includes an English garden , a herb collection and a rhododendron collection. There was also the permanent carriage exhibition of the Basel Historical Museum .

Park in the countryside

The Migros Basel cooperative undertook to maintain the site for a hundred years. For this purpose it had already notarized the “Im Grünen” foundation on July 11, 1978, based in Münchenstein. The maintenance of the park is financed by the Migros Culture Percentage . The green 80 contains several ponds, wooded areas, open spaces, sculptures, barbecue sites and two restaurants.

Seismosaurus in the "Green 80"

In 2005 an exhibition consisting of 18 life-size and realistic-looking plastic dinosaurs took place. More than 700,000 people visited the dinosaur exhibition, including many school children. The " Seismosaurus " - which is much larger than the old concrete dinosaur - remained standing for a long time. On the night of May 21, 2005, the exhibits were badly damaged by vandals and the " Velociraptor " exhibit disappeared without a trace. Overall, according to Migros, property damage of around CHF 250,000 had been caused.
