Germany relay

The Germany relay is a 14-day long-distance relay race ( Ekiden ) around Germany . The idea arose in the newsgroup de.rec.sport.laufen. The organization of the Germany relay was achieved through project management based on the GNU philosophy.

The virtual planning of the first German season started on April 27, 2004, the physical implementation of the first season took place during the 2004 Summer Olympics . The relay race was divided into the eight sections east, north-east, north, north-west, west, south-west, south and south-east with start and finish in Leipzig.

In the Germany relay, 247 sections of 5 to 32 kilometers in length were run continuously day and night. A total of 3555 kilometers was covered. The baton was passed from stage to stage, as it should be for a proper relay. Before the start of the race, more than 600 runners had already registered bindingly on the homepage and usually determined their sections themselves. On August 29, 2004 the season was brought to a successful conclusion in Leipzig.

The second German relay took place from July 22nd to August 6th, 2006 with start and finish in Wuppertal .
