Sally Barsosio
Sally Barsosio (born March 21, 1978 in Keiyo , Kenya ) is a Kenyan long-distance runner . At a height of 1.65 m, her competition weight is 46 kg.
Career
The third of the Junior World Championships in 1992 in the 10,000-meter run took place at the age of 15 and 153 days at the 1993 World Championships in Stuttgart for the first time in an international championship in the adult class. Behind the two Chinese women Wang Junxia and Zhong Huandi , she won the bronze medal in 31:15:38 minutes and became the youngest medalist in the history of world championships in athletics. Because of her lack of experience, Sally Barsosio ran so unorthodox several times that other runners had to stop suddenly. The South African Elana Meyer , who was runner-up in the 1992 Olympics, gave up. Sally Barsosio was cautioned by the referees after some discussion, but not disqualified. In this confusion, she was neglected to take a doping sample and her time was not recognized as a junior world record as a result.
At the World Athletics Championships in Gothenburg in 1995 , Barsosio was eleventh in the 5000 meter run . The following year he was 10th in the 10,000 meter run at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta .
Until 1997, no Kenyan had ever won a world title on the track. At the 1997 World Championships in Athens it was Sally Barsosio who won Kenya's first women's title with a furious final sprint on the last 1000 meters in 31: 32.92 minutes. Portuguese Fernanda Ribeiro came in second in 31: 39.15 minutes. Since Sally Barsosio was still a junior, her winning time was recognized as a junior world record.
At the African Championships in 1998 Sally Barsosio was second in the 5000 meter run. At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney and the 2004 Games in Athens , Sally Barsosio finished 17th in the 10,000 meter run.
Sally Barsosio won bronze at the World Cross Country Championships in 1995. With the Kenyan team she won gold in 1995, 1996 and 1998 and silver in 1997 and 2004.
In 1998 Sally Barsosio won silver with the Kenyan team in the marathon relay world championship behind Ethiopia. In the marathon relay , called Ekiden , six runners run a relay over the marathon distance of 42.195 kilometers, with the individual route sections being 5 km, 10 km, 5 km, 10 km, 5 km and 7.195 km.
On February 18, 2002, she became the mother of a boy named Ricky. Both her uncle Paul Koech and her older sister Florence Barsosio are also successful as long-distance runners.
