Liz McColgan

Liz McColgan-Nuttal MBE (birth name: Elizabeth Lynch ; born March 24, 1964 in Dundee ) is a former Scottish long-distance runner .

She won the Dundee Schools Cross Country Championship back in 1976 at the age of 12 . McColgan-Nuttal won the 10,000 meter run at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh . In 1988 she won silver at the Olympic Games in Seoul over 10,000 meters behind Olga Bondarenko (URS) and in front of Jelena Schupijewa-Vjasowa (URS). At the same distance McColgan-Nuttal won gold and bronze over 3000 meters at the Commonwealth Games in Auckland in 1990 .

Her sponsor Nike dropped her in 1990 after telling him she was pregnant with Eilish . In 1991 McColgan-Nuttal took part in an international 5-kilometer race in Florida just six weeks after Eilish was born, and in March she won bronze at the World Cross Country Championships in Antwerp. At the world championships , she won gold over 10,000 meters.

McColgan-Nuttal was also successful as a marathon runner . She won the New York City Marathon in 1991 , the Tokyo International Women's Marathon in 1992 and the London Marathon in 1996 , in which she came second in 1997 and 1998. McColgan-Nuttal also won the Great North Run three times over the half-marathon distance (1992, 1995, 1996).

Personal

In 1987 Liz married the Northern Irish long distance and obstacle runner Peter McColgan and lived with their children in Carnoustie near Dundee. The couple separated in November 2010 and divorced in March 2013. On January 18, 2014, she married coach John Nuttal.

After the end of her active sports career, she opened her own fitness club in 1999 and began to train young talents. Her daughter, Eilish McColgan , who she trains, is also a successful Scottish middle and long distance runner who has already participated in two Olympic Games.

Honors

  • In 1991 she was named Sportswoman of the Year in Great Britain .
  • In 2004 she was inducted into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame .
