Tirunesh Dibaba ( Amharic ጥሩነሽ ዲባባ ; born June 1, 1985 in Bekoji , Arsi Province ) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner . She is a three-time Olympic champion and five-time world champion.

Career

In 2003 she won her first international title at the junior women’s race at the World Cross Country Championships , in which she had finished second the year before.

2004 Olympic Games

At 5000 Meters the 2003 World Championships in Paris / Saint-Denis she took the gold medal and the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens the bronze medal over the same distance behind Meseret Defar (ETH) and Isabella Ochichi (KEN).

At the US indoor meeting Boston Indoor Games in 2005 she set an indoor world record over 5000 meters with 14: 32.93 minutes , which was broken in 2009 by Meseret Defar. She improved Berhane Adere's (ETH) record by almost seven seconds. Two months later she won the Cross Country World Championships on both the short and the long distance.

At the World Championships in Helsinki in 2005 , she won the gold medal over 5000 meters from Meseret Defar and over 10,000 meters from Berhane Adere. Tirunesh Dibaba is the first female athlete to have won both long distances on the track at the same world championships.

In 2006, she defended her cross-country world championship title on the long distance, and at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka she won the 10,000-meter run again.

In 2008 she was again cross-country world champion and Africa champion over 10,000 meters. In the the IAAF Golden League belonging Bislett Games she set with 14: 11.15 min a 5000-meter world record, which the old record was improved by Meseret Defar by a good five seconds.

Olympic Games 2008

She demonstrated her exceptional position at the Olympic Games in Beijing . With 29: 54.66 minutes, the second fastest time run up to then, she won the gold medal over 10,000 meters ahead of Elvan Abeylegesse (TUR) and Shalane Flanagan (USA). On top of that, a week later she also won the 5000 meter run in a time of 15: 41.40 minutes ahead of Elvan Abeylegesse (TUR) and her compatriot Meseret Defar .

In 2009 Dibaba improved the world record in the 15 km road run at the Zevenheuvelenloop by 27 seconds to 46:28 minutes. A persistent ankle injury prevented her from participating in the World Championships in Berlin . In 2010 she finished fourth at the World Cross Country Championships in Bydgoszcz and successfully defended her 10,000-meter title at the African Championships in Nairobi . After a long injury break, she won the San Silvestre Vallecana at the end of 2011 .

Olympic Games 2012

Dibaba was able to defend her Olympic victory in Beijing at the 2012 London Games . She is the first female athlete to ever do this. A few days later she won bronze over the 5000 meter distance.

At the 2013 World Championships in Moscow , she won the 10,000-meter run again.

In the fastest race in history over 10,000 meters for women at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, she increased her best time over 10,000 meters to 29: 42.56 minutes as third place.

On April 23, 2017, she finished second in the London Marathon in 2:17:56 h, her best time in the marathon , making her the third fastest athlete of all time. In October she won the Chicago marathon in 2:18:31 h.

In London in 2017, she achieved the silver medal in the final run of 10,000 meters at the World Championships with a gap of more than 46 seconds and a time of 31: 02.69 minutes.

In May 2018, the 32-year-old won the Great Manchester Run for the fifth time after 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017 . It has also held the course record there since 2013.

Personal

Tirunesh Dibaba is 1.55 m tall, weighs 44 kg and is married to her fellow runner Sileshi Sihine . She is the cousin of two-time 10,000 meter Olympic champion Derartu Tulu . Her older sister Ejegayehu Dibaba and her younger sister Genzebe Dibaba are also successful long-distance runners.
