Genzebe Dibaba ( Amharic ገንዘቤ ዲባባ ; born February 8, 1991 in Bekoji ) is an Ethiopian medium and long-distance runner and current world record holder over the 1500 meter distance .
Career
The younger sister of Ejegayehu and Tirunesh Dibaba won gold in the junior women race of the cross country world championships in 2008 and 2009 and silver in the 5000 meter run at the junior world championships in Bydgoszcz in 2008 .
At the 2009 World Championships in Berlin , in the absence of her sisters, who had dominated this route so far, she was eighth over 5000 meters.
At the International Indoor Athletics Meeting on February 12, 2012 in Karlsruhe, she ran over 1500 meters at 4:00, 13 minutes. This was the fifth best time ever run in the hall. A month later she won the 1500 meter title at the 2012 World Indoor Championships in Istanbul .
On February 1, 2014, she exceeded the previous indoor world record by over three seconds in Karlsruhe over 1500 meters with 3: 55.17 minutes. Five days later she broke another indoor world record over 3000 meters. In Stockholm she was over seven seconds faster than the previous world record holder Meseret Defar with 8: 16.60 min . A world best over the 2-mile distance, which is not an official IAAF discipline, followed on February 15 with 9: 00.48 min. At the World Indoor Championships in Sopot , she won her second gold medal after Istanbul in 2012.
On February 19, 2015, Dibaba set her third indoor world record over 5000 meters in Stockholm with 14: 18.86 minutes, improving the six-year-old record of Meseret Defar by more than five seconds.
In April 2015 she was named World Sportswoman of the Year with the Laureus World Sports Awards .
On July 17, 2015, at the Diamod League meeting in Monaco, she improved Qu Yunxia's almost 22-year-old world record over 1500 meters to 3: 50.07 min. At the World Championships in Beijing she won the gold medal in 4: 08.09 min. Over 5000 meters she had to admit defeat to her compatriots Almaz Ayana and Senbere Teferi and won bronze.
On February 17, 2016, she improved the indoor world record over 1 mile to 4: 13.13 min on the World Indoor Tour in Stockholm ( Sweden ) . At the 2016 World Indoor Championships in Portland , she won the gold medal over 3000 meters. On August 16, 2016, she won the silver medal over 1500 meters at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro .
After a mixed season in 2017, Dibaba took part in the World Championships in London as defending champion without a previously contested 1500 meter race, but with a world best time of the year over 1 mile . She won the preliminaries with confidence, but weakened in the semifinals and only got to the final over time . There she could not repeat her success and was only 12th and last. She would also have been registered over 5000 meters, but after the disappointment with her specialty, she did not compete due to illness.
In the 2018 indoor season, Dibaba was again in excellent shape and competed at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham both over 1500 and 3000 meters with the best preliminary performances. In both finals, which were initially characterized by tactics, she increased the pace considerably over the course of the race and was able to win gold twice from the front.
