The 11th World Indoor Athletics Championships took place from March 10th to 12th, 2006 in Moscow . The competitions were held in the Olimpijski sports complex . A total of 26 decisions (13 each for men and 13 for women) were on the program.

Moscow was commissioned by the World Athletics Federation in November 2003 to host the event. The candidacy of the Russian capital surprisingly prevailed against Madrid's application . The World Indoor Championships were the first major sporting event in Moscow since the 1980 Olympic Games .

635 athletes from 129 countries took part. The DLV team consisted of seven female and nine female athletes.

There was no longer a 200-meter run. The reason for this was that the outcome of the races became too predictable due to the tight corners. Athletes who had to run on the narrow inner lanes usually had no chance of winning the race.
