Bryan Ezra Tsumoru Clay (born January 3, 1980 in Austin , Texas ) is a former American decathlete .

Clay moved to Hawaii from Texas when he was five . He attended James B. Castle High School and then Azusa Pacific College. Clay celebrated first successes in 1999 when he won the title at the US Junior Championships and the Pan American Junior Games. In 2001 in Edmonton and in 2003 in Paris / Saint-Denis , Clay took part in the world championships, but did not finish the competitions.

At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens he won the silver medal behind the Czech Roman Šebrle and set a personal best with 8,820 points. The following year he won the title at the World Championships in Helsinki in 2005 and left Šebrle with 8732 points by more than 200 points. Clay won silver in the heptathlon at the World Indoor Championships in Budapest in 2004 and in Moscow in 2006 . In 2004 Šebrle won and in 2006 André Niklaus won .

In 2006 Clay won the Mösle all-around meeting in Götzis. At the 2007 World Championships in Osaka , he had to give up the competition after four disciplines due to injury. In 2008 Clay won gold in the decathlon at the Beijing Olympics .

Clay is 1.80 m tall and weighs 84 kg. He is a relatively balanced all-rounder in the first nine disciplines, but falls significantly behind most of the other decathletes in the 1,500 meter run . In the discus throw , Clay holds a world record for decathletes in competitions over 7000 points with 55.87 m (2005 in Carson).
