After a sixth place at the 2003 World Youth Championships, Robles was able to finish second at the World Junior Championships in 2004 . In 13.77 s, however, he was clearly behind the winner, Aries Merritt from the USA, who had won in 13.56 s. At the Central American and Caribbean Games, he won the title in 13.12 s. In 2007 Robles won the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro in 13.25 s before David Payne and Yoel Hernández. At the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, Robles was considered a candidate for a medal. In 13.15 s, however, he only finished fourth behind the world record holders Liu Xiang , Terrence Trammell and David Payne. At the World Athletics Finals in Stuttgart, Robles ran up to four hundredths of a second to the Chinese world record in 12.92 seconds and clearly beat Payne and Trammell.

Just before the finish line at the 2008 Olympics

Robles traveled to the 2008 World Indoor Championships in Valencia as the clear favorite after running the second fastest indoor time of all time in 7.33 s; only Colin Jackson had been faster in his indoor world record of 7.30 seconds. In the run-up to Valencia, however, Robles broke off his start because he believed it was a false start, the other runners ran through and Robles was eliminated. On June 12th, Robles broke Liu Xiang's world record from 2006 with 12.87 s at the Golden Spike Meeting in Ostrava. At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , he was Olympic champion in 12.93 s and was more than two tenths of a second behind David Payne and David Oliver . Liu, who was considered to be his biggest competitor, was unable to start because of an injury in the preliminary run.

At the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, Robles did not play in full strength and gave up in the semifinals due to an injury. In Doha in 2010 Robles became world indoor champion over 60 m hurdles with a new championship record ahead of the two Americans Terrence Trammell and David Oliver.

Robles next to Liu Xiang, 2011 World Championships

At the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, he won the final with 13.14 seconds, but was subsequently disqualified. The Chinese federation protested his victory after Robles obstructed Chinese athlete Liu Xiang shortly before the finish line. In London, Robles did not reach the finish line due to injury in the final of the 2012 Olympic Games . Olympic champion was Aries Merritt , who also improved Robles' world record shortly after the Games .

Dayron Robles is 1.92 m tall and has a competition weight of 80 kg. His uncle Eulogio Robles was one of Cuba's best hurdlers over the 400-meter distance in the 1970s . He studied at the Manuel Fajardo Sports University in Santa Clara .

Rift with the Cuban Athletics Federation

In January 2013, Robles applied for his discharge from the Cuban national squad, which he was granted. He then left the country and settled in France. He accepted an offer from AS Monaco to join this club and represent it at competitions. The Cuban Athletics Federation then filed an official protest against this contract at the International Athletics Federation. In June the Cuban association chairman Alberto Juantorena declared that Robles would no longer be allowed to compete for Cuba in the future. Due to internationally set deadlines for changing from one national team to another, Robles was unable to compete in the 2013 World Championships . Robles had won numerous prize money during his international career, which, according to the rules of Cuban sport, went to the state, of which the active only received a small percentage. In the course of the dispute with the Cuban authorities, Robles alleged that the Cuban authorities still owed him money. Juantorena denied this and replied that Robles, unlike other athletes, was immodest and had received a car and a house from the state in his home province of Guantánamo in the course of his career, and that the transfer of another house in Havana had already been planned. According to Juantorena, Robles had proposed the establishment of a training facility for hurdlers that was independent of the state authorities, but Juantorena rejected this as incompatible with the regulations.
