Hayes Jones

Hayes Wendell Jones (born August 4, 1938 in Starkville , Oktibbeha County , Mississippi ) is a retired American athlete . With a height of 1.80 m, his competition weight was 76 kg.

Despite his rather small body size, Hayes Jones was among the world's best in the 110-meter hurdles for years due to his high basic speed and excellent technique . As the winner of the US trials, he was the favorite at the 1960 Olympic Games , but was only able to win the bronze medal behind defending champions Lee Calhoun and Willie May . This 1960 race was so far the last 110-meter hurdle final in Olympic history, in which all three medals went to the USA. In the following years Jones won other titles in the USA and so he was also able to qualify for the 1964 Olympic Games . And now he was able to win the gold medal that he had missed in 1960 in 13.6 seconds.

Hayes Jones could not set a world record in hurdles in his career. Nevertheless, he is also represented in the list of world record holders. He was a member of the US 4 x 100 meter relay , which on June 15, 1961 in Moscow, was able to improve the world record from 39.5 s to 39.1 s.

After retiring as an athlete, Jones embarked on a career in the civil service. He became a senior officer in the Oakland County Administration and served briefly as a member of the Michigan House of Representatives in 2006 .
