In 7.62 s, Olijars was sixth at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham in 2003 , but was eliminated from the World Championships in Paris-Saint-Denis due to injury in the run-up. 7.49 s were enough for him at the 2004 World Indoor Championships in Budapest only to fourth place. At the 2004 Olympic Games there was an exciting battle for places behind the new world record holder Liu Xiang from China. Terrence Trammell of the USA won silver in 13.18 s ahead of Cuban Anier García in 13.20 s. The Jamaican Maurice Wignall and Olijars as the best European followed in fourth and fifth place with 13.21 seconds each .

At the European Championships in Gothenburg in 2006 , Staņislavs Olijars won the title in 13.24 s, ahead of the German Thomas Blaschek in 13.46 s. This enabled Olijars to clearly underline his position as the best European in the hurdles sprint. He not only succeeded the serial winner Colin Jackson, but was also the first gold medalist at European Athletics Championships for Latvia since Jānis Daliņš had won while walking in 1934.

At a height of 1.90 m, his competition weight is 80 kg. He is trained by his mother Ludmila Olijare , who set a Latvian record in the 100 meter hurdles in 1989 with 12.90 s.
