Dimitri Bascou (born July 20, 1987 in Schœlcher , Martinique ) is a French athlete who specializes in hurdles .

Athletic career

After he achieved his first successes in Martinique, he moved to Eaubonne in the north of France in 2004 for sporting reasons . In 2007 he moved to the Lagardère Paris Racing club and this was followed by his first successes. In 2008 he finished second at the national championships with a new personal best of 13.61 s. He was even able to win this title the following year and at the same time take silver at the Mediterranean Games in Pescara . Consequently, he was in the squad for the World Athletics Championships 2009 in Berlin . There he was able to set a new personal best (13.49 s), but was eliminated in the semi-finals.

In 2010 he was able to defend his title at the French championships and, in fourth place, missed a medal at the European championships by just 2 hundredths of a second (13.41 s, PB).

2016 was then Bascous' most successful year in sport to date. At a meeting in Berlin he set a new national record over 60 m hurdles (7.41 s). At the indoor world championships that followed in March, he reached third place. When he won the national championships, he set a new personal record of 13.05 s, which is not counted due to the excessive tailwind (2.1 s). Because of these achievements, he went to the 2016 European Championships in Amsterdam as a favorite. He was able to confirm this role by winning the 110 meter hurdles (13.25 s).

At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro he achieved the bronze medal. This was the first French podium placement in this discipline since Guy Drut 1976. On November 30, 2016, he received the Knight's Cross of the Ordre national du Mérite for winning a medal .
