Schœlcher is a French commune with 19,997 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) on the Caribbean island of Martinique . It is the fourth largest municipality on the island after Fort-de-France , Le Lamentin and Le Robert . Schœlcher is located on the west coast of Martinique and belongs to the metropolitan area around the island's capital Fort-de-France.
The place was originally called Case-Navire , but was named after the French publicist, statesman and colonial politician Victor Schœlcher in 1888 . Schoelcher was a pioneer of abolitionism and a major initiator of the decree on the abolition of slavery in France of April 27, 1848. The slightly different typography (Schoelcher's last name is usually not written with the ligature œ ) corresponds to the stipulations of the Institute's Code officiel geographique geographique national .
Partner communities are Fessenheim in Alsace , where Victor Schoelcher's parents came from, and Houilles near Paris , where Schoelcher died in 1893.
In the municipality is the Martinique campus of the University of the Antilles and Guyanas .
