Rivière-Salée is a commune in the overseas department of Martinique in France . It is located in the southwest of the island, borders the bay of the Baie de Fort de France and administratively belongs to the Arrondissement Le Marin . The inhabitants call themselves the Saléens. Until its dissolution in 2015, it was the main town ( chief lieu ) of the canton of the same name .

history

There is a large and a small castle in Rivière-Salée. In the 17th and 18th centuries the settlement was called "Cul-de-Sac-à-Vaches". From 1716 it formed a single municipality with Les Trois-Îlets , which was known to be "Les Trois Bourgs" from 1837-49.
