Manuel Martínez Gutiérrez (2009)

Manuel Martínez Gutiérrez (born December 7, 1974 in León ) is a former Spanish shot putter . In 2003 he won gold at the World Indoor Championships and in 2004 bronze at the Olympic Games.

Life

Manuel Martínez was vice world champion and European champion in the junior area. In 1993 he won his first Spanish championship indoor and outdoor. Indoors he won fifteen championship titles in a row from 1993 to 2007, outdoors he won from 1993 to 1998 and from 2000 to 2006 (as of December 31, 2007). From 1993 to 2002 he improved the Spanish national record 16 times. At the age of 19 he missed his first medal at the European Championships by 19 centimeters at the European Indoor Championships, and only six years later did he get his first medal with silver in Ghent. His best year was 2002 when he set his personal best both indoors and outdoors. In Vienna, his best indoor performance was enough to win the European Championship; his open-air record in Salamanca would have been enough to win the title at the European Championships in Munich.

In 2003 Martínez achieved his greatest success with the victory at the World Indoor Championships, outdoors he could not qualify for the World Cup finals in 2003 as 15th in the qualification. In 2004 he missed the Olympic bronze medal by 23 centimeters compared to the Dane Joachim Olsen , Olsen was only nine centimeters behind gold and silver. After the winner Jurij Bilonoh was convicted of subsequent doping controls , Martínez subsequently received the bronze medal in 2013.

In 2006 Martínez narrowly missed the final battle in his fourth European Open Air Championships in ninth place. In 2008 Martínez took part in the Olympic Games for the fourth time. There he did not reach the final fight, as he did at the 2009 World Championships.

With a height of 1.85 m, his competition weight was 125 kg.
