Joachim Brøchner Olsen (born May 31, 1977 in Aalborg ) is a former Danish shot putter and three-time Olympian (2000, 2004, 2008).

Career

At the beginning of his career he was also active as a discus thrower . When Olsen was studying history at the University of Idaho , he switched his shot put style from the paring technique to the twisting technique, improved dramatically and finally focused on the discipline.

In 1999 Olsen was U23 runner-up in Europe, and at the 2001 World Athletics Championships in Edmonton was tenth. In 2002 he won silver at the European Indoor Championships and at the European Championships in Munich , where he was only beaten by Jurij Bilonoh . At the 2003 World Championships in Paris / Saint-Denis, he failed in qualifying. Since October 2003 he has been trained by Vésteinn Hafsteinsson .

In 2004 Olsen won bronze at the World Indoor Championships in Budapest and originally at the Olympic Games in Athens , where he was behind Jurij Bilonoh and Adam Nelson with 21.07 m . In 2012 he was subsequently presented with the silver medal because Bilonoh was doped.

In 2005 he was European indoor champion and seventh at the world championships in Helsinki .

In 2006, Olsen was initially bronze again at the World Indoor Championships in Moscow and was subsequently awarded the silver medal in 2018 because of Andrej Michnewitsch's doping disqualification . There was another bronze medal for him at the European Championships in Gothenburg , where he again initially placed behind Ralf Bartels and Andrej Michnewitsch with 21.09 m , but subsequently received silver because of Michnewitsch's doping disqualification.

In 2007 Olsen won bronze at the European Indoor Championships , but was eliminated from the qualification at the World Championships in Osaka . Olsen is 1.84 m tall and weighed around 130 kg in the competition.

In July 2009 he declared his active time over.
