Geoff Capes (actually: Geoffrey Lewis Capes ; born August 23, 1949 in Holbeach , Lincolnshire ) is a former British shot putter .

Life

At the British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 1970 he finished fourth for England .

In 1972 he finished eighth at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Grenoble and was eliminated from qualifying at the Olympic Games in Munich . The following year he was seventh at the European Indoor Championships in Rotterdam .

In 1974 he won the British Commonwealth Games in 1974 in the shot put and was fifth in the discus throw . A victory at the European Indoor Championships in Gothenburg was followed by a bronze medal at the European Athletics Championships in Rome and a silver medal at the European Indoor Championships in 1975 .

In 1976 he won the European Indoor Championships in Munich and was sixth at the Olympic Games in Montreal . At the Indoor European Championships in 1977 in San Sebastián, he won silver, at the Indoor European Championships in 1978 in Milan, bronze.

After he had defended his title in the shot put at the Commonwealth Games in 1978 , he shortly afterwards reached the final at the European Championships in Prague , in which, however, he did not succeed in a valid shot. In 1979 he was second at the European Indoor Championships in Vienna for the sixth time in a row on the podium at this event. At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, he was fifth.

He was AAA outdoor champion seven times (1972, 1973, 1975–1979) and indoor six times (1971, 1972, 1974, 1975, 1977, 1978).

After his athletics career ended, he won The World's Strongest Men competition in 1983 and 1985 . He is also successful as a breeder of budgies .
