Remigius Machura (born July 3, 1960 in Rychnov nad Kněžnou ) is a former Czech shot putter who was internationally successful for Czechoslovakia in the 1980s.
He won his first international medal at the European Indoor Athletics Championships in 1982 in Milan, where he finished second behind the Yugoslav Vladimir Milić with 20.07 m . In the same year Machura was at the European Athletics Championships in Athens with 20.59 m third behind Udo Beyer and Jānis Bojārs and was able to displace Milic in fourth place. At the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 1983 Machura won the bronze medal again, this time with a width of 20.98 m behind Edward Sarul and the later Olympic champion Ulf Timmermann .
Machura had the strongest season of his career in 1985. In that year he became both world and European indoor champions. At the so-called World Indoor Athletics Games in Paris , he referred Udo Beyer and Jānis Bojārs to the places with a width of 21.22 m. At the European Indoor Championships in Athens he beat Timmermann and later three-time world champion Werner Günthör with 21.74 m . Machura's achievements were however in a dubious light when he tested positive for the anabolic steroid stanozolol in the same year . Because of this doping offense , he was initially banned from competition for life, but this was suspended again after two years.
Machura was allowed to take part in the World Athletics Championships in Rome in 1987 , where he was fourth with 21.39 m. At the European Indoor Championships in Budapest in 1988 , he won the title with 21.39 m in front of Karsten Stolz and Georgi Todorow . Later that season, Machura finished fifth at the Seoul Olympics with 20.57m. In 1992 he ended his international career and became a trainer in the athletics department of Sparta Prague .
Remigius Machura was 1.86 m tall and had a competition weight of 118 kg. His son Remigius Machura is also a shot putter and became Junior European Champion in 2005.
