Ryan Keith Whiting (born November 24, 1986 in Harrisburg , Pennsylvania ) is an American shot putter .

Athletic career

Whiting was the 2005 Pan-American junior champion in discus and shot put. Until 2010 he studied civil engineering at Arizona State University . There he won five NCAA championships: in 2009 and 2010 in the shot put (indoor and outdoor) and in 2010 with the discus.

In 2011 Whiting won the American Indoor Championships in the shot put. At the World Athletics Championships in Daegu , he finished seventh. The following year he won the indoor world championships in Istanbul with a width of 22.00 m, ahead of the outdoor world champion David Storl from Germany and the Olympic champion Tomasz Majewski from Poland. In contrast, he disappointed at the Olympic Games in London with a width of 20.64 m, which only reached ninth place.

At the World Championships in Moscow in 2013 , he was second behind Storl with a width of 21.57 m. The following year there was another duel with Storl at the World Indoor Championships in Sopot . This time Whiting was able to prevail again with a width of 22.05 m and thus successfully defend his title.

Whiting is 1.92 m tall, weighs 134 kg and is trained by Dave Dumble. He uses the rotary joint technique.
