Christian Cantwell (born September 30, 1980 in Jefferson City ) is an American shot putter . In 2009 he was world champion and three times indoor world champion.

Since 2000, when he first took part in the US trials for the Olympic Games in Sydney , he tried to advance to the top of the world. In the first few years, however, he lacked the consistency to qualify for major international competitions, especially because he had great competition in the USA with John Godina and Adam Nelson .

In 2004 he took part in the World Indoor Championships in Budapest and won the gold medal with 21.49 m. In June Cantwell improved his personal best to 22.54 m. In July, however, he was only fourth at the US championships with a width of 20.56 m and was not allowed to the Olympic Games in Athens .

In 2005 he was able to become the US champion for the first time with a width of 21.64 m and qualify for the world championships for the first time. At the World Championships in Helsinki he won the qualification, in which his big competitor John Godina was eliminated due to injury, but in the final battle he could not confirm the qualification distance again and only came in fifth. It was won by his compatriot Adam Nelson. At the World Indoor Championships in 2006 he did not reach the final battle.

2007 Cantwell was after another strong season only fifth in the US Trials and missed the qualification for the World Championships in Osaka . In 2008 he won his second title at the World Indoor Championships in Valencia with 21.77 m. In his last attempt at the Olympic Games in Beijing , he exceeded three competitors who had been ahead of him with 21.09 m and secured the silver medal.

At the 2009 World Championships in Berlin , he won the gold medal with a width of 22.03 m ahead of the Pole Tomasz Majewski , to whom he had been defeated a year earlier in Beijing. In 2010 Cantwell became indoor world champion for the third time in Doha . The following year he just missed a medal at the World Championships , four centimeters behind third. With the same deficit, he finished fourth at the 2012 Olympics .

Christian Cantwell's personal best since 2004 is 22.54 m. At a height of 1.98 m, his competition weight is 136 kg. He has been married to the shot putter Teri Steer since 2005 , with whom he has one child.
