Jefferson City is the capital of the US state Missouri , hometown of Lincoln University, founded in 1866, and a Catholic bishopric . The city is the administrative seat of Cole County , but also extends into neighboring Callaway County .

The city is located on the Missouri midway between Kansas City and Saint Louis, the two most important cities of Missouri. With the establishment of the state, the capital was to be relocated from eastern Saint Charles to the center and the choice fell on a river bend on the Missouri.
population
With 43,079 inhabitants, the city is only 15th among the largest cities in Missouri (2013). The population is declining slightly, while most cities in the United States have solid population growth. The United States Census Bureau estimated the population (July 2016) at 43,013 people.
history
As early as 1826, the legislature moved into the new settlement, which initially consisted of little more than a few log houses.
The Old Munichburg district was founded in the 19th century by emigrants from today's twin town Münchberg. Jefferson City is named after Thomas Jefferson , the third American president.
Not far away, on October 14, 2004, the Bombardier Canadair Regional Jet crashed on Pinnacle Airlines flight 3701 .
The National Park Service has 45 structures and sites for Jefferson on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of November 7, 2018).
