Suzette Haden Elgin

Suzette Haden Elgin (born Patricia Anne Wilkins , born November 18, 1936 in Jefferson City , Missouri, † January 27, 2015 in Arkansas ) was an American writer and linguist .

Elgin published both non-fiction and fiction. In addition to the language she constructed, Láadan , which she created to deal with the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis , according to which language shapes people's thinking, Elgin also founded the Science Fiction Poetry Association .

Life

After earning an MA from Chico State College in 1968, she began writing science fiction in order to raise the tuition fees for attending the University of California, San Diego . She earned a Ph.D. in 1973. Degree in Linguistics, submitting two versions of her PhD, in English and Navajo . In 1985 she published a grammar and dictionary for the Láadan she had created , a language suitable for the needs of women. Elgin was a well-known exponent of feminist science fiction literature. Her first sold work, For the Sake of Grace , appeared in the Magazine for Fantasy and Science Fiction in 1969 . She has received several awards for her work, including the Academy of American Poets Award.

Elgin took up a chair in linguistics at San Diego State University in 1972 and directed the Ozark Center for Language Studies in Arkansas. After her retirement in 1980, she lived in Arkansas with her husband George Elgin. Elgin had four children, two sons and two daughters. She was married to George Elgin for the second time, previously with Peter Haden since 1955. Suzette Haden Elgin died on January 27, 2015 at the age of 78.

In German-speaking countries, Elgin is best known for the trilogy Native Tongue , of which only Native Tongue (German: America of Men , 1987) and The Judas Rose (Native Tongue II) (German: Die Judasrose , 1990) have been published in German . The Earthsong (Native Tongue III) , released in 1993, also belongs to the novel cycle . In Native Tongue , Elgin, against the background of a dystopia in which women no longer have civil rights , also deals with the origin, theory and dissemination of the Láadan language, which is developed in novels by women for the sole and secret use of other women.
