Hafþór Júlíus "Thor" Björnsson ( German transcription Hafthor Julius Björnsson , born November 26, 1988 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic strongman , actor and former basketball player . In 2018 he won the World's Strongest Man , Europe's Strongest Man and the Arnold Strongman Classic . He lives in Iceland with his wife.

Sports

Hafþór began his sports career as a basketball player. With a height of 2.05 meters, he first played in the Icelandic Dominos League at KR Basket Reykjavík as the center on the starting line-up. At the same time he was used in the Icelandic national basketball team .

In the 2007-2008 season he moved to the Islandic Division 1 basketball team FSu Selfoss to play in the position of the center.

Due to a serious knee injury at the age of 20, he had to end his promising basketball career.

Hafþór was discovered in 2009 by the Icelandic strongman Magnús Ver Magnússon in his fitness studio "Jakaból". Magnús predicted that Hafþór would have good prospects as a strongman. Hafþór won several competitions in 2010, including a. Strongest Man in Iceland , Iceland's Strongest Viking , Westfjords Viking and the OK Badur Strongman Championships in Iceland.

Hafþór finished second behind Brian Shaw in the first event of the Jon Pall Sigmarsson Classic . He won Strongest Man in Iceland 2011 on June 4, 2011 and Iceland's Strongest Man 2011 on June 18, 2011. Hafþór finished fourth on August 6, 2011 at Giants Live 2011 in Poland.

The weight of the 2.05 m tall Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson is approximately 180 kg according to his own statement.

World's Strongest Man

Hafþór first competed in World's Strongest Man after receiving a wild card that invited him to compete in 2011. He finished sixth at the time.

In the following years he took third place three times (2012, 2013 and 2015) and three times second place behind the Lithuanian Žydrūnas Savickas (2014), the American Brian Shaw (2016) and the British Eddie Hall (2017).

In 2018 Hafþór won the World's Strongest Man for the first time .

Hafþór Björnsson played the role of Gregor Clegane (called "The Mountain", English: "The Mountain") from 2014 in the HBO series Game of Thrones from season 4 to season 8. After Conan Stevens in the first season and Ian Whyte in the second season, this character was occupied throughout with Hafþór.

Others

For a campaign by the company SodaStream , he ironically targeted himself in his role as "Mountain" to promote the avoidance of plastic waste.

Hafþór has been the spokesperson and co-owner of Icelandic Mountain Vodka since 2016 .

Hafþór Björnsson suffers from facial paralysis . He is married to a Canadian and has a daughter from a previous relationship.
