Andrew Howe (born May 12, 1985 in Los Angeles , United States ) is an Italian athlete .

Life

His mother Renée Felton , a former American hurdler, moved with him to Rieti in Italy in 1990 and married Ugo Besozzi there . Renée Felton brought her son to athletics early on and also acts as his trainer. Howe's father was Andrew Howe Sr. , a football player of German origin.

Andrew Howe set numerous Italian age group records in the sprint and long jump as a teenager. In 2001 he won the long jump at the Youth World Championships in Debrecen , and in 2004 at the Junior World Championships in Grosseto the long jump with 8.11 m and the 200-meter run in 20.28 s.

In 2004 he also took part in the Olympic Games , but was eliminated in the prerun over 200 meters. At the 2006 World Indoor Championships , he won bronze in the long jump, his first international medal in the adult class. In Gothenburg at the European Championships in 2006 he won the long jump with 8.20 m, after jumping 8.33 m in qualifying.

At the European Indoor Championships 2007 Howe qualified eighth for the final. After the fourth attempt he was fourth in the final with 7.93 m. In the fifth attempt, he jumped the Italian indoor record with 8.30 m. Thanks to this distance, he won the title 28 centimeters ahead of second-placed Greek Louis Tsatoumas .

At the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, Japan, he improved the Italian record previously held by Giovanni Evangelisti in his last jump with 8.47 m . However, this jump was "only" enough for the silver medal, as Irving Saladino from Panama exceeded this distance with 8.57 m in the very last jump of the competition. In 2008 Howe took part in the long jump at the Olympic Games in Beijing, but retired with 7.81 m as 20th of the qualification.

Howe had surgery on his Achilles tendon in September 2009. In 2010 he returned and won his second Italian championship title in the long jump after 2007. At the European Championships in Barcelona in 2010 , he finished fifth with 8.12 meters. In 2011 and 2012, Howe won the Italian championship title in the 200-meter run, as in 2007.

Howe continued his career outside the limelight in the years that followed. In 2018 he surprised with a 200 meter time of 20.47 seconds, his best time since 2011.

In the 200-meter run, with 20.28 seconds from 2004, he is second in the all-time Italian best list behind Pietro Mennea .

Andrew Howe is an Italian soldier and as such a member of the sports promotion group of the Italian Air Force in Vigna di Valle near Rome .
