Hans Baumgartner (born May 30, 1949 in Stühlingen ) is a former German athlete .

Personal

Hans Baumgartner was born on May 30, 1949 in Stühlingen in southern Baden . He started playing sports when he was 14. First gymnastics, then he switched to athletics. He lived in Waldshut and moved to Heppenheim in 1967 . He had completed an apprenticeship as a draftsman for heating and ventilation construction and started his first job there. He later studied in Darmstadt and became a graduate engineer with his own office. He runs an engineering office for technical building equipment in Mörlenbach with six employees. He is the father of a daughter and lives in Alsbach .

Athletic career

In 1967 he achieved 7.54 meters in the long jump, a German youth record. From then on one expected a lot from him. But for two years he could hardly improve, especially since he fluctuated between high and long jump. Under his coach Hansjörg Holzamer , he developed steadily and in 1970 he won the title at the German Junior Championships with 7.97 meters and made the final breakthrough. His first 8-meter jump he reached at the European Indoor Championships in Sofia , with 8.12 meters, which was at the same time the title win was.

He won the silver medal at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich . With 8.18 meters he was only surpassed by Randy Williams with 8.24 meters. This distance remained his personal best and his greatest success. He also took part in the 1976 Olympic Games in long jump, where he finished eighth. He also started at the European Athletics Championships in 1971 and 1974.

In the years from 1971 to 1974 won Baumgartner four times the German championship in long jump . In 1970, 1976 and 1977 he finished third. On the other hand, he had to leave the DLV record to his strongest national competitor, Josef Schwarz .

Baumgartner won the national title in the hall in 1969, 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1977. He was European indoor champion in 1971, 1973 and 1977.

Hans Baumgartner belonged to the TV Waldshut (1960-66), the TV Heppenheim from 1967 to 1976 and the ASC Darmstadt (from 1977). When he competed, he was 1.87 m tall and weighed 75 kg.

On September 11, 1972, he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf for his sporting successes.
