The ASC Darmstadt is a sports club based in Darmstadt , which especially in athletics is successful.

history

In 1921, the Darmstadt Academic Sports Club was founded by students from the Darmstadt Technical University . After the Second World War, the club was not accepted into the State Sports Association of Hesse because it was perceived as a professional organization. That is why the Allgemeine Sportclub Darmstadt was founded in 1952, in which all members of the Academic were automatically members.

The youth department was founded in 1960 and, under the leadership of Helmut Meyer and Siegfried Schmitt , the general sports club developed into a large club in the 1960s. With Wella , a major local sponsor was won, so that the ASC operated under the name ASC Wella for a decade . The Darmstadt city run has been held since 1978 . Today the Academic Sports Club focuses on maintaining tradition, maintaining the clubhouse and promoting the youth work of the General Sports Club.

The first successful runner was Fritz Schilgen , who was also the final runner in the torch relay of the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. Lutz Philipp and Werner Trzmiel took part in the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico. Christiane Krause won the gold medal with the 4 x 100 meter relay at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. The world record holder in hammer throw Walter Schmidt took part in the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, where Klaus-Peter Hildenbrand and Lothar Krieg won bronze.
