Walter Schmidt (athlete)

Walter Schmidt (born August 7, 1948 in Lahr / Black Forest ) is a former German athlete and Olympic participant who - starting for Germany - was a successful hammer thrower in the 1970s . He set world records in 1971 and 1975 , each of which remained unmatched for almost three years. In 1977 it became known that Schmidt was taking anabolic steroids .

He took fifth place each at the European Championships in 1971 (70.12 - 70.54 m - 68.66 - 69.34 - 69.46 - invalid) and at the 1976 Olympic Games (72.58 - 74.72 m - 74.36 - 73.52 - 74.72 - 72.42). In 1975 he won the silver medal at the World Student Games ( Universiade ) (72.00 m).

Walter Schmidt belonged to the sports club ASC Darmstadt . He had a competition weight of 135 kg with a height of 1.92 m.

From 1979 to January 2012 he worked as a sports and geography teacher at the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Schule (Frankfurt am Main) .
