The Freiherr-vom-Stein-Schule (FvSS) is a high school in Frankfurt am Main in the Sachsenhausen district . Currently 1071 students are taught by 90 teachers.

The FvSS has been recognized as a "MINT-friendly school" since December 2018. Among other things, it delivers excellent teaching in the MINT subjects . This is also promoted by the school's “I am MINT AG”. It creates a connection to numerous professions, different companies and everyday school life.

history

Today's Freiherr-vom-Stein-Schule was founded on April 19, 1909 under the name Kaiser Wilhelms-Gymnasium . Since the schoolhouse in Hedderichstrasse was not yet completed at this point in time, lessons were held in neighboring schools and other municipal facilities. On October 16, 1911, with the inauguration of the new school building by President Hengstenberg, this provisional arrangement was completed.

After the end of the Second World War , the Kaiser Wilhelms-Gymnasium was renamed the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Schule after Heinrich Friedrich Karl vom Stein in 1945 .

Increasing student numbers in the 1960s and 1970s made major renovations to the original building from 1911 necessary. Part of the school building was demolished and a new building complex was added.

The original building from 1911 is no longer preserved today. Due to the increasing number of students in 1960 and 1975, the original building was converted and rebuilt. Since summer 2007 a new school building has been built on the same site, which was completed in spring 2009 and the school community moved into again in the 2009/10 school year.

Bilingual branch

Freiherr-vom-Stein-school has since the school year 2001/2002 a bilingual branch in the area of German - Italian . The main concerns are the promotion of multilingualism and intercultural learning. Not only are there more foreign language lessons being given or the foreign language being made the language of instruction in just one subject. Italian is the second language of instruction in a class from grade 5.

In the two subjects Mathematics and Language & Literature , two teachers teach together, an Italian and a German teacher, whereby only their own language is used. The students, in turn, support each other, as they have to react bilingually. Specialist courses in Italian are also offered.

As the first school in the state of Hesse, the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Schule will be able to take the Italian Abitur from 2010.

The offer gives the students in the bilingual class two more hours per week.

From Grade 5, English is offered as the first foreign language as an independent main subject and from Grade 6 the option of choosing between Latin , Italian and French as a second foreign language.

New construction

Demolition of the old building (2007)

The Freiherr-vom-Stein-Schule was modernized from 2007 to 2009 with the help of the second large PPP project in Frankfurt . The dilapidated and cramped school was completely demolished and replaced by a new building. The renovation costs were borne by the construction company Hochtief , which will rent the new building to the city of Frankfurt in the future. This has met with great criticism.

The entire school community was outsourced until mid-2009 during the demolition work and the construction of the new school building. A provisional school complex made of containers was built near the Mühlberg , where all of the school operations took place for two school years, apart from physical education. The physical education was distributed to the surrounding sports halls in Frankfurt am Main.

At the beginning of the 2009/2010 school year, school operations began in the newly built school building. One week later, on August 31, the new building was officially handed over by Hochtief to the city of Frankfurt.

classes

The school has a MINT focus. Here u. a. subject-related classes in computer science, mathematics and natural sciences take place. The school offers numerous advanced courses in the MINT area and computer science as an examination subject for the Abitur.

Numerous working groups complete the afternoon program and encourage and challenge the students individually.

The FvSS is also a recognized test center for the European Computer Driving License (ECDL).

Since September 2019, the school has had completely new IT equipment, which was installed according to the concept of the IT teacher, who is also the IT officer. State-of-the-art technology is available for teaching in all rooms. The FVSS sets standards with its e-learning offer, with which students are supported even after the actual lesson and independent learning is practiced.
