Bettinaschule

The Bettinaschule is a grammar school in Frankfurt am Main , Westend district , named after the writer Bettina von Arnim . Around 1000 students are taught by around 80 teachers and 9 trainee teachers at the school .

history

The Bettinaschule goes back to the municipal high school for boys and girls in Bockenheim , which was founded in 1855 , which at that time was still an independent town at the gates of Frankfurt. In 1877 the citizen school was divided into a secondary school for girls and a school for boys. The latter is now the Liebig School. After the incorporation of Bockenheim in 1895, the school was named Viktoriaschule in 1898 , probably after Empress Auguste Viktoria . The Viktoriaschule moved into a representative new building on the Senckenberganlage in the south of Westend, right next to the Wöhlerschule . In 1908 the school became a municipal lyceum , so that university entrance qualifications could be obtained here. Since 1923 the Viktoriaschule was recognized as an upper secondary school .

In 1933, after Ludwig Gerber, a staunch National Socialist, was appointed headmaster , the majority of the Jewish students and teachers had to leave school. A memorial stone in the school yard commemorates them .

After the war, when almost all of Frankfurt's schools were destroyed or badly damaged, the Viktoriaschule also taught students from the neighboring Wöhlerschule. In 1947, the school was finally renamed the Bettinaschule by order of the American military government . It was named after the writer Bettina von Arnim. In 1961 the new building in Feuerbachstrasse in the Westend was completed. Since September 1, 1967, the Bettinaschule has also been accepting boys.

memorial

The construction of the memorial was the result of a project Remembering for the future - memorial for former Jewish classmates of the student council of the Bettinaschule. In 2001, the Bettinaschule received the Peace Prize of the Frankfurt Schools for this commitment. The memorial project named as a memorial for former Jewish Victoria students consists of two elements, an open memorial archive in the school and a memorial in the school yard.

offer

The focus of the school is located in the arts by offering things in art , music ( school choir ) and a theater - or dance AG (Dance Community). In the 5th and 6th grades there are orchestral classes with three hours of music lessons per week, in the intermediate level additional music lessons are offered for interested students. As part of the holistic afternoon program of the city of Frankfurt and the state of Hesse, there are numerous working groups, homework assistance and support courses in which the students can participate voluntarily. During the lunch break , two warm meals are offered in the school café .
