Helmut Meyer (sports official)

Helmut Meyer (born October 22, 1926 in Herford ; † May 13, 2001 in Darmstadt ) was a German sports official.

Meyer himself did athletics , was a German university champion in boxing and played basketball in the big leagues. From 1949 to 1956 he studied history, sports, Latin and politics at the University of Marburg . In 1951 he became a sports advisor at the university and in 1952 he was head of the athletics department at Union Herford . In 1953 he was Secretary General of the World Student Games in Dortmund. From 1953 to 1956 Meyer was President of the General German University Sports Association and from 1955 to 1959 Vice President of the FISU .

After completing his studies, Meyer became an assistant at the Institute for Physical Education at the TH Aachen in 1957 . From 1960 to 1970 he was director at the Institute for Physical Exercise at the TH Darmstadt . At the same time, he was involved as an instructor for the Hessian Athletics Association and the ASC Darmstadt . In 1970 he became the leading director of the Federal Committee for Competitive Sports of the German Sports Confederation (he brought Rolf Andresen , Dietrich Martin , Tomasz Lempart , Richard Möll, Manfred Eglin and Arnd Krüger , among others ) and was then one of the key decision-makers in top German sport for almost two decades.

From 1989 to 1993 Meyer was President of the German Athletics Association (DLV). During his term of office, the financial consolidation of the association, the union with the German Association for Athletics of the GDR (DVfL), the award of the World Athletics Championships in 1993 to Stuttgart and big discussions about doping in athletics.

Meyer was awarded the DLV's Carl Diem shield in 1979 and the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class in 1986 . All five national athletics associations of the former DVfL made him an honorary member.
