Gottlieb Muffat
Gottlieb (Theophil) Muffat (born April 25, 1690 in Passau , † December 9, 1770 in Vienna ) was an Austrian organist and composer .
Life
Gottlieb Muffat was a son of the composer Georg Muffat , from whom he probably received his first music lessons. After his father's death, he settled in Vienna, where his brother Franz Georg Muffat (1681–1710) worked as a chamber musician in the court orchestra from 1701. There he became court scholar (student of the court orchestra), where he was a student of Johann Joseph Fux .
In 1717 he was by Charles VI. appointed imperial court and chamber organist. He gave music lessons to the children of the imperial family, including the later Empress Maria Theresa. In 1729 he was appointed second organist and in 1741 court organist. In 1764 Muffat was retired with a substantial annual pension of 900 guilders. Georg Christoph Wagenseil was most likely one of his students .
plant
Muffat wrote mainly compositions for organ and harpsichord , including numerous fugues and toccatas . His compositions for the harpsichord appeared under the title Componimenti musicali (1739). He also created a Salve regina , a Sonata pastorale and three harpsichord concerts, in which he already used elements of the modern gallant style .
In 1940 Muffatgasse in Vienna- Meidling (12th district) was named after him.
